Drawing this card signifies that there is a change or transition coming. There’s readjustment, rebirth, and regeneration. You’re seeking a solution to a problem, but there is lack of progress. You’ve made efforts towards a goal, but you may still not reach it. You’ve made excessive sacrifices and they may go unnoticed. There’s a pause in your life right now.

Reversed, this card means you’re unwilling to make any sacrifices or do what it takes to reach your goal or your sacrifice may simply be futile. You are not truly giving of yourself.

For some reason, good or bad, I have had death on my mind for a few months now. It pops up a lot more frequently than it used to (maybe it’s just my age). Especially during this holiday season, I’ve thought about not only the loved ones I have lost over the years, but my life in the future. We are guaranteed loss in our futures. Everything that lives, dies. I’m not looking at it with depression, necessarily, but I won’t lie and say that it doesn’t frighten me to think about my life without the ones I love. Those who die first have it easy, they don’t have to live without their loved ones.

This is all a bit morbid, I realize and in sharp contrast to the joy of the holiday. I’m sharing this because today I came across a poem that makes me smile and offers some comfort. Those we love are never really lost to us.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
– Mary Elizabeth Frye

Came across this article about how you can help the people of Newtown, CT and wanted to share. Spread this around!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by the pure evil committed in Newtown, CT. May the goddess be with those left behind to deal with their grief and terror. I commend the faculty of that school, those alive and those dead, who protected the children to the best of their abilities. That is true heroism.

I would also like to commend those who responded to the scene. That must have been a truly horrible thing to witness. May the goddess soothe their souls.

In continuation from the previous Magical Herbs post (Parsley), we move now to Sage thanks to Simon and Garfunkel.

Sage leaves

Sage is an extremely popular magical plant and you may find that you use it in ways that I don’t have listed here, as this is not meant to be all encompassing. Please share!

Its scientific name is Salvia officinalis, though I feel I must mention that this is the scientific name for only one species of sage plant. All sage plants will share the same magical properties.

Sage’s gender is masculine, it is ruled by Jupiter, and its element is Air.

It is used in immortality, wisdom, wish, longevity, and protection spells.

For protection, one can simply burn a bundle of sage, wafting the smoke around oneself or around a room or house, etc.

Carry it to encourage wisdom or again for protection.

For the most part, I use sage in protection/purification mixes. I must admit, I’m not particularly fond of the smell of it when it burns and I tend to lean towards other herbs that do the same things, like lavender or vervain.

What ways do you use sage in your magical workings?

broken heart

A friend of mine asked me yesterday after reading the Parsley post, what the difference between a love and lust spell was. I thought this was a pretty good question and wanted to share not only the question, but my answer with you.

A lust spell is basically for sex. There’s no way to really sugar coat it. It’s a booty call spell.

A love spell is for something more permanent and for more than just sex.

With that being said, I’d like to add my usual disclaimer here: I do not condone and do not personally do myself, any spells like either of the above on another human being. Casting a lust spell on someone else is manipulative and infringing on another person’s rights. Same goes for the love spell.

If you really want to attract someone’s attentions for either of those purposes, cast a spell on yourself! Cast a spell on yourself to make you more attractive, more radiant, more whatever, but never cast a spell like that on someone else.

Now, I know there are others out there who would disagree with my on the casting of spells on others and all I have to say is: I am not looking for argument. I am simply stating my beliefs on the matter and don’t want to have the “And it harm none, do what you will” argument.

I would, however, like to hear anyone else’s explanations on the difference between a love and a lust spell. Feel free to comment!
