The last year or so (maybe even two) I have felt more and more disconnected. I endured three years of worsening mistreatment at my job. It included bullying and ‘lack of hours’ type scheduling leaving me for weeks at a time without a shift. I truly loved my job, despite the treatment, as I worked with animals as a Licensed Veterinary Technician. I helped them heal, I calmed their fears, I cared for their bodies (and I like to think for their souls, as well). I comforted clients who had to say goodbye to their beloved companions and I was there, comforting and loving, as we sent suffering animals on their way to peace. Through all of that, I was bullied and mistreated at work and quickly experienced a type of caregiver burnout. I believe in being open and honest and was told by my boss that he, too, was an ‘all cards on the table’ type of straight shooter. That was a flat out lie that I quickly learned, but couldn’t do anything about. He lied and connived and manipulated all of his staff and if you weren’t a favorite (which I quickly wasn’t because of my dislike of lying to other staff members as he asked me to do on numerous occasions and my staunch reluctance to engage in ‘office politics’) he badgered and tormented you. My other issue there was that my coworkers were his niece and daughter and then later a woman who had worked for him in the past, but didn’t have my certifications, that he brought in to replace me but didn’t actually fire me (hence the ‘lack of hours’ I was told every week when I was forced to call in looking for work). So, with his other employees being family, I didn’t have anywhere to turn (even though he treated them in varying degrees the same way he treated me). I did mention a few of my issues to the office manager, but she just blithely stated that she didn’t think that what I mentioned was happening and implied I was reading too much into the situation.

Now, you might be saying at this point, “Why didn’t you just quit and find another job?” Well, by the time I had decided I needed to leave that place, my confidence in myself had been greatly diminished. I had gone into the job vulnerable to start with (I was still very much in the early stages of grief over the loss of my beloved dog, Shadow and my grandmother) and had just been stomped on and demeaned so much by someone I had initially looked up to (my boss) that I felt worthless and incompetent. I’ve discovered in the medical professions not many coworkers will hold your hand and be comforting to you or just generally care about you at all.

Fast forward to 2014 when my mother, who had a stroke a few years prior, called me and said she wanted to move closer to me because her husband at the time had left her in the middle of the night. She was unable to do a lot of basic things for herself and needed help. I immediately said that I would help her and after a few months of planning, she moved up near me. This gave me the courage to resign from my job as I now had a ‘good reason’ in my mother needing my help.

For the next year I helped my mother. I took her grocery shopping, to doctor appointments, out for drives for fun, and so on. I helped her shower and prep food. As she progressed through a consistent schedule of physical therapy (something she had never had before) she became able to do more things for herself. She was able to shower alone, to prep food herself, and to do her own laundry and basic household cleaning. Through it all, however, we were constantly fighting. If the right decision was to turn left, she would immediately without hesitation turn right.

My mother and I have a very complicated relationship. She was an alcoholic for most of my childhood and all through my teenage years. I can count on one hand how many times she beat me as a child, but it isn’t the frequency that makes abuse. She was verbally and emotionally intimidating and I lived in an almost constant state of fear of her or of the outside world because she constantly drilled it into me that outsiders couldn’t be trusted. To this day I still have moments when I expect my husband (who is the most gentle person I have ever known) to turn to me and start screaming at me (something he has never ever done, but something my mother did all the time; she was wildly unpredictable)

When I turned 18, I ran away from home and lived with my dad. My dad and I had issues, as well, but we talked them through and our relationship is solid now. My mother, on the other hand, refuses to acknowledge her drinking problem. She has been sober now for quite a few years, but that doesn’t erase the past. It doesn’t erase my need for resolution. I have since realized I will need to find resolution on my own, but that’s another story. So, because of my pent up, unresolved anger with my mother, I found myself butting heads with her, sometimes purposely in a redirected aggression sort of way.

Eventually, caring for my mother and having that history with her that I can’t talk to her about, broke me down. I was going through not only caregiver fatigue once again, but also dealing with roiling resentment and issues I couldn’t resolve. My body gave up and I got incredibly ill. I had borderline pneumonia (my half sister pointed out that lung issues can come from unresolved grief) and was bed ridden for almost three months. I got ill in late September/early October of last year and didn’t recover until February of this year. I have never been so sick in my life. I hope to never be that sick again. If I hadn’t been so weak, I would have been terrified at the time. I couldn’t breathe and had to use inhalers. It felt like I was dying.

When I recovered, I discovered that my mother had gotten back together with her now ex husband and within a few months of my recovery, they moved back across the country and out of my life. Right or wrong, I was relieved and grateful. She is a person I simply cannot have in my life. She is toxic for me.

It has been a few months since all of that and we are entering my favorite season of the year, Autumn. I feel more alive and rejuvenated this time of year than any other. So, I am hoping to capitalize on these energized feelings and move forward with healing myself. I read Practical Protection Magick: Guarding and Reclaiming Your Power by Ellen Dugan and it has helped me see some things I did wrong in the work situation as well as how to work on the psychic yuck I have clinging to me. I have been so swallowed up by negativity this past year or so that I didn’t even realize it. Isn’t it amazing how that can happen?

So, I’m working on clearing the negativity from my life. I have even created my first permanent altar and it has made so much difference for me. I used to just have one that I would set up if I needed to do a spell or ritual, but to have a permanent one feels so good. I’m working on being happy and am on the road to health and hope to be blogging regularly again soon.

Blessed be to everyone and may you find balance and healing in your lives!

I don’t think I have ever been more happy to see Spring than I am this year. While Winter hasn’t been the worst I’ve lived through in Michigan, it has been extremely cold. Yes, we get cold, but this has been extreme for my area of Michigan. We were seeing -30° wind chills and having multiple days in a row where you were in danger of frostbite if you stayed out longer than 10-15 minutes. Yuck!

The temperatures are up in the 30’s-40’s now with a few extremes in either direction, but mostly staying above freezing and all the snow in my yard is completely gone! I’ve been opening the windows on the warmest days and airing out the house. The cats love it.

There is a special energy unique to Spring and that is what has charged the ‘open the windows, but keep the heat on’ fever in this house. Now is the time to wake up, refreshed and charged and ready to take on… well, everything! Part of that energy is Spring cleaning. By cleaning our house, we are raising the vibrations of the energy around us. ‘Cleaning’ doesn’t just mean the physical removal of dirt and grime, though. It also means organizing, rearranging, and donating or throwing out things we no longer need. This article talks about ways to raise the vibration of your home.

This time of year is also perfect for cleansing your home of negative energy, another good way to raise the vibration of your home. Here is an article I wrote about a stealthy way to cleanse your home/room if you need to hide things like that.

If you’re out of the broom closet, live alone, or don’t mind people seeing you cleansing your home, another good and simple way is to smudge with sage or incense. Sage, dragon’s blood, lavender, and vervain are all excellent for dispelling negative energy and have protective effects. Frankincense and myrrh are both good for raising spiritual vibrations.

Now, go out there and:

Quartz is a very versatile stone. It is both receptive and projective. It is of the Sun and the Moon, Fire and Water.

It has been used throughout ancient civilizations all over the world. It has been used in the Eleusinian mysteries, Native American rites, in the Renaissance and European magic of the 1800’s, throughout Britain, and in the Yucatan.

Quartz has been used for healing, scrying, protection, divination, enhancing psychic powers, peaceful sleep, lactation, and to amplify magic.

It comes in different colors that correspond to different uses. While receptive and projective stones all share some of the same uses, certain stones work better for certain things, even though they may overlap that use with others.

Clear or White Quartz

This stone is both receptive and projective. It is, perhaps, the most versatile of the colors of quartz. It can be used for healing, legal issues, sleep, prophetic dreams, protection, success, magical and physical energy, gardening, love, peace, compassion, fertility, spirituality, defensive magic, courage, willpower, purification, friendship, psychism, dreams, removing stress, and astral projection.

Blue Quartz

This is a receptive quartz good for peace, removing stress, compassion, love, wisdom, spirituality, psychism, fertility, growth, prosperity, friendship, sleep, dreams, and eloquence.

Green Quartz

Green quartz is a receptive stone that can be used for prosperity spells. Also wear it to stimulate creativity. Just like blue quartz, green quartz is also used for peace, removing stress, compassion, love, wisdom, spirituality, psychism, fertility, growth, friendship, sleep, dreams, and eloquence.

Herkimer Diamonds

These are projective stones. They can be used as a substitute for diamonds in spell work. They are energizing stones and good to use for protection, exorcism, healing, luck, success, intellect, will power, courage, and self confidence.

Rose Quartz

Used for love and to open the heart chakra, this quartz is receptive. Wear it to attract love and use it in magic for peace, fidelity, and happiness. As a receptive stone, it can be used for the same things as blue and green quartz: peace, removing stress, compassion, love, wisdom, spirituality, psychism, fertility, growth, prosperity, friendship, sleep, dreams, and eloquence.

Rutilated Quartz

This is an energy stone, so it is no surprise that it is projective. Wear during rituals or put it on the altar to increase the effectiveness of the ritual. It is also good to use for protection, exorcism, healing, luck, success, intellect, will power, courage, and self confidence.

Smoky Quartz

This is a receptive stone. Use it to ground and protect as well as to get rid of negativity and depression. As a receptive stone, it can also be used for peace, removing stress, compassion, love, wisdom, spirituality, psychism, fertility, growth, prosperity, friendship, sleep, dreams, and eloquence like the other receptive stones above.

Tourmalated Quartz

This is worn to aid in astral projection and is a projective stone. As a projective stone, it can also be used for protection, exorcism, healing, luck, success, intellect, will power, courage, and self confidence.

Finishing off the Simon and Garfunkel song, we come to thyme. Parsley, sage, and rosemary can be found at these links.

Scientifically, thyme is known as Thymus vulgaris. Commonly, it has been called Common Thyme or Garden Thyme.

Thyme is a feminine plant ruled by Venus. The element associated with it is Water.

https://i0.wp.com/www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/t/thygar16-l.jpg

Healing/health, love, courage, purification, psychic powers, and sleep are its magical uses.

Wear or burn thyme for good health. Use it in any healing spell.

Put it under your pillow if you’re having trouble sleeping. It is said to keep nightmares away, as well.

Thyme can also be burned to magically cleanse an area. A bath of thyme and marjoram is said to cleanse a person of past ailments and grief.

A woman who wears a sprig of thyme in her hair is said to be irresistible. If you carry it and smell it, it will give you courage and energy. Wearing it will allow you to see fairies.

I’ve been having a ‘situation’ at work with a fellow employee that I would describe as hostile. No matter how polite I am, this coworker sends out extremely negative energy towards me and refuses to speak to me. Even when directly spoken to this person refuses to respond. I’ve tried carrying stones and herbs to only slight effect. So, as a means of getting through my work day, I began to cast a protective spell, the gist of which was to reflect all negative energy from me and back to the sender. It sort of worked. I would feel a little better by the end of my shift, but the hostility from the other person seemed to be escalating. Finally, one day before work as I was doing my usual protective spell (how awful is it to feel so threatened at work that you need to cast a spell of protection around yourself?), I just changed it ever so slightly. Instead of reflecting negativity back at whoever sent it my way (I never specifically thought of this person in my spell, just all negativity), I had it be ‘neutralized.’ I envisioned positive energy counteracting the negative energy and it just being neutralized like an acid and a base.

Wow, did that make a difference. That was the best day I had at work since this person started working there. It has been 2 (maybe 3?) weeks since I did that and not only have I not felt the need to protect myself at work (though I still do), this person has actually spoken to me and offered me assistance. HUGE turnaround. I have always cast reflective protective spells before because that was what I was taught. I think I’ll be using neutralizing ones, instead from now on.

What kinds of protective spells do you use?

In keeping with the Simon and Garfunkel theme for my magical herbs posts, we come to rosemary. Check out parsley and sage.

Rosmarinus_officinalis

Rosemary’s scientific name is Rosemarinus officinalis. Common names associated with rosemary are Dew of the Sea, Compass Weed, Guardrobe, Sea Dew, Incensier, Libanotis, Polar Plant, and Elf Leaf.

Its gender is masculine and it is ruled by the sun. Fire is the element associated with it.

Its magical powers are protection, enhancing mental powers, love, lust, purification/exorcism, aiding in sleep, youthfulness, and healing.

Burning or smudging rosemary is used to purify and cleanse a place of negativity and is particularly useful before working magic.

Place rosemary under your pillow to guard against nightmares and to promote a good night’s sleep. Place it under the bed itself to protect the sleeper from all harm.

Hang it from the porch or doorposts to protect against thieves.

Carry it for health and to aid the memory. Bathe with it to purify and to preserve youth.

Burn it to promote love or lust.

Use an infusion of it to wash your hands before healing work.

Because of its powerful cleansing and purifying vibrations, rosemary can be used as a substitute for frankincense.

In continuation from the previous Magical Herbs post (Parsley), we move now to Sage thanks to Simon and Garfunkel.

Sage leaves

Sage is an extremely popular magical plant and you may find that you use it in ways that I don’t have listed here, as this is not meant to be all encompassing. Please share!

Its scientific name is Salvia officinalis, though I feel I must mention that this is the scientific name for only one species of sage plant. All sage plants will share the same magical properties.

Sage’s gender is masculine, it is ruled by Jupiter, and its element is Air.

It is used in immortality, wisdom, wish, longevity, and protection spells.

For protection, one can simply burn a bundle of sage, wafting the smoke around oneself or around a room or house, etc.

Carry it to encourage wisdom or again for protection.

For the most part, I use sage in protection/purification mixes. I must admit, I’m not particularly fond of the smell of it when it burns and I tend to lean towards other herbs that do the same things, like lavender or vervain.

What ways do you use sage in your magical workings?

Lavender is one of my favorite plants. It smells beautiful, looks beautiful, and the bees love it!

Magically, lavender is considered to be a masculine plant, ruled by the planet Mercury and the element of Air.

It offers love, protection, sleep, chastity, longevity, happiness, peace, and purification.

It is said if you carry lavender it will enable you to see ghosts. I carried it on a ghost hunting trip as an experiment once and, well, let’s just say I wasn’t disappointed!

The scent of lavender is said to promote long life.

Of course, lavender has been used in love spells and sachets and is said to be particularly attractive to men.

If you burn or smolder lavender it will help cause sleep and rest. (Just make sure it’s in a safe spot so nothing catches on fire!)

Scattered about the house, it will help maintain peace.

I have used lavender mostly for protective, purification, and peace magic and also for its health benefits. According to the ancient Greeks and Romans, it is antibacterial and antifungal. Whenever I have a cold, I try to fill the house with the scent of lavender (even if my nose is plugged!) and I sip on lavender tea.

I like to use lavender in house protection/purification magic because it has a strong protective feel to it and because it smells better to me than sage. To protect and or purify your home with lavender there are a few different things you can do:

Smolder the lavender and carry it through the house so that the smoke reaches the corners of every room

Make an infusion of lavender (aka tea), let it cool, put it in a spray bottle, and lightly spritz the house (You can also use lavender essential oil in some water, instead.)

Sprinkle lavender in the corners of your rooms

Sprinkle lavender around the outside of your house

Whichever protection/purification method you choose, make sure that while you do it you visualize your home free of negativity and protected from it. Your visualization and energy is more important, even, than the proper herb for the job.

Now that we’ve magically used lavender, let’s cook with it!

I found two different recipes for iced tea with lavender.

Chamomile Lavender Mint Iced Tea

1 cup fresh mint leaves (loosely packed)

2 tablespoons dried lavender

1 ½ tablespoons dried chamomile (roughly 4 tea bags)

Crush the mint leaves and put them into a 1 gallon jar with a lid.

Add the lavender and chamomile.

Fill the jar with a gallonish of water and cover. Refrigerate 6 hours before straining the herbs from the liquid.

Serve!

Lavender Mint Iced Tea

4 cups boiling water

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon dried lavender

¼ cup loosely packed mint sprigs

Honey to sweeten

Lemons and/or lavender sprigs to garnish

Pour the boiling water over the mint and lavender and allow to steep for five minutes before straining.

Sweeten with honey, if desired, then refrigerate until chilled.

Serve over ice garnished with lemon and lavender sprigs.

Lavender Martini

2 oz. Bombay Sapphire gin

½ oz. dry vermouth

½ oz. lavender simple syrup

2 dashes orange bitters

Sprig of lavender for garnish

Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake it well.

Strain into chilled cocktail glass and garnish with lavender sprig.

Lavender Simple Syrup

1 cup water

3 tablespoons fresh or dried lavender

2 cups sugar

Bring water and lavender to boil.

Stir in sugar until fully dissolved.

Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and allow to cool before straining out the lavender.

Pour into a bottle and keep refrigerated. This will last about a week.

Quick note: these are not my recipes, I am not taking credit for them. I found them over the years.

Over the centuries, lavender has been used for a great many things: embalming corpses, repelling mosquitoes, and as a flavoring for snuff. The oil has been used in varnishes and lacquers.

What do you like to use lavender for?

Before we go over magical properties of lilies, just a few quick notes. Some lilies are toxic to humans and ALL LILIES are fatally toxic to cats. Even their pollen. Alright, now onto magical properties.

The Lilium spp., or lilies, are feminine plants.

They are ruled by the Moon.

Water is the element associated with lilies.

Deities associated with the lily are Juno, Venus, Nephthys, and Kwan Yin

Lilies are usually used for protection magic, but can also be used for breaking love spells.

Plant a lily in your garden to keep away ghosts, protect against evil, keep unwanted visitors away, and protect against the evil eye.

As an antidote to a love spell, wear or carry a fresh lily flower (this is for love spells involving a specific person).

Personally, I have not used lilies in any magic and probably will not due to the toxicity of them. My two cats never need to come anywhere near lilies!

Blessed be! )O(
